Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi underwent a routine medical check-up at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Wednesday and has now returned home, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said.

The brief hospital visit comes weeks after the senior Congress leader was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi following health complications linked to fever and a systemic infection. Sonia Gandhi, 79, was admitted on March 24 after complaints of nausea and vomiting and spent nearly a week in hospital before being discharged.

At the time, the hospital had said she was responding well to antibiotics being administered for the infection.

Her health had also prompted Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, to cancel a scheduled visit to Kerala earlier this year.

Addressing a rally virtually in Kozhikode at the time, Rahul Gandhi had spoken about his mother’s hospitalisation and the anxiety surrounding her condition.

“I would have liked to come here, but I was forced to stay in today and was unable to come. Yesterday, my mother was hospitalised and I, as a son, was quite worried about her,” he had said.

He had also thanked a nurse from Kerala who attended to Sonia Gandhi during her treatment.

Veteran Congress leader has faced multiple health issues in recent years

The former Congress president has undergone treatment and observation for health-related issues on multiple occasions over the past year.

In June last year, Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla after complaints of high blood pressure while on a personal visit to Himachal Pradesh with her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

She was also admitted to a hospital in Delhi around the same time for stomach-related complications and kept under observation in the gastro department.

The Rajya Sabha member has previously undergone treatment for a fungal infection in her respiratory tract, reportedly triggered by high pollution levels in Delhi.

Congress leaders, however, maintained on Wednesday that her latest visit to Medanta was only for a routine check-up and that she is now back at home.
