Internal divisions have surfaced within the Trump administration as Washington weighs diplomatic and military options after stalled negotiations with Iran triggered fresh tensions.

US President Donald Trump has sharply escalated his rhetoric against Iran, calling Tehran’s latest proposal “a piece of garbage” as discussions within his administration increasingly shift towards the possibility of renewed military action against the Islamic Republic.
The latest remarks come at a time when ceasefire efforts in West Asia appear fragile and diplomatic negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain stuck. According to sources familiar with the matter quoted by CNN, frustration inside the Trump administration has deepened over Iran’s handling of the nuclear issue and what officials see as Tehran’s unwillingness to seriously engage in negotiations.

Trump, speaking at the Oval Office on Monday during a maternal healthcare event, suggested the situation had deteriorated significantly and warned that the ceasefire was barely surviving.

“After reading that piece of garbage they sent us, I didn’t even finish reading it. They (Iran) are on life support. The ceasefire is on massive life support,” Trump said.
According to CNN, the US President has grown increasingly impatient not only with the stalled talks but also with Iran’s continued control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Sources cited by the network said Trump believes divisions within Iran’s leadership have slowed down meaningful diplomatic progress.
CNN reported that several officials in Washington are now questioning whether Tehran genuinely intends to negotiate. The uncertainty has also triggered disagreements within the Trump administration over how the US should respond moving forward.
Some officials, particularly within the Pentagon, are said to be pushing for a more aggressive strategy involving targeted military strikes aimed at weakening Iran’s position further.
Others, however, are urging caution and want diplomatic channels to remain open for more time.
One official cited by CNN noted that both countries appear to be operating with very different expectations and timelines for negotiations. The source added that Iran, having faced economic sanctions and pressure for decades, may not feel the same urgency that Washington expects.
CNN also reported that Trump met his national security team again at the White House on Monday to review possible next steps regarding Iran.
However, sources familiar with the discussions told the network that no major decision is likely before Trump leaves for China on Tuesday afternoon local time.
The developments come amid growing uncertainty in West Asia, with concerns mounting over whether diplomatic efforts can still prevent another phase of direct confrontation between Washington and Tehran.
