Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is participating in the Somnath Amrut Mahotsav in Gujarat on Monday, May 11, said that the consecration of the historic Somnath Temple in 1951 marked the “proclamation of India’s spirit of Independence”.
“On this very day 75 years ago, the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple took place. This was not an ordinary occasion. If India became independent in 1947, then the consecration of Somnath in 1951 marked the proclamation of India’s spirit of independence,” Prime Minister Modi said while addressing a gathering.

Prime Minister Modi said that he was not just witnessing a glimpse of 75 years, but the “resolve of creation emerging from destruction, which Somnath has embodied.”
“I see the victory of truth over falsehood, which Prabhas Patan has repeatedly witnessed. I see thousands of years of spiritual consciousness that has given the entire world the message of human welfare,” he added.
Being a devoted follower of Somnath, Prime Minister Modi highlighted that he has visited the place many times and bowed before the deity on numerous occasions.
“However, today, as I was coming here, this journey through time gave me a deeply pleasant experience. Just a few months ago, I had visited here when we were celebrating the Somnath Swabhiman Parv,” he stated.
The Prime Minister said that the Somnath Amrut Parv is not just a festival to celebrate the past, “it will be India’s inspiration for next 1000 years”.
“Time itself manifests by His will. He who is beyond time, who Himself is the embodiment of time. Today, we are commemorating 75 years of the consecration of the idol of that Lord of Lords, Mahadev. He from whom this universe is created and into whom it ultimately dissolves. Today, we are celebrating the reconstruction of His sacred abode,” PM Modi noted.

Notably, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the ruins of Somnath after Independence and expressed his determination to rebuild the temple.
The reconstruction was undertaken soon after with public participation and national resolve, while the present temple was constructed in the Kailash Mahameru Prasad architectural style.
India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, ceremonially consecrated the temple on May 11, 1951. After 75 years, the Somnath Temple continues to stand tall as a symbol of national pride and spiritual endurance.
