Amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ports, Shipping and Waterways, as well as External Affairs on Friday, May 8, provided major updates on fuel availability, maritime operations and measures being undertaken to maintain stability across key sectors.

During the briefing at the National Media Centre, the officials informed that LPG supply continues to remain affected by the prevailing geopolitical situation, but no dry-outs have been reported at LPG distributorships.

It was stated that online LPG cylinder bookings increased to about 99 per cent on industry basis on May 7 and Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) based deliveries have gone up to about 95 per cent to prevent diversion.

During the last two days, over 97 lakh LPG cylinders have been delivered against bookings of around 87.66 lakh cylinders.

The officials said that the government is carrying out enforcement actions across the country to curb hoarding and black marketing of LPG. In this regard, over 2,000 raids were conducted across the country on May 7.

Further, PSU OMCs have strengthened and continued surprise inspections, imposing penalties on 378 LPG distributorships, while 76 LPG distributorships have been suspended.

Around 1.11 lakh small 5 kg LPG cylinders have been sold during the last two days. Since April 3, public sector oil companies have organised more than 10,700 camps to increase awareness about the small cylinders used for cooking by migrant workers in urban areas, officials said.

Apart from this, over 15,493 metric tonnes (equivalent to more than 8.15 lakh 19 kg LPG cylinders) of commercial LPG have been sold during the last two days.

Moreover, about 6.5 lakh PNG connections have been gasified and infrastructure created for an additional 2.66 lakh connections, taking the total to 9.16 lakh connections. Also, about 7.08 lakh customers have been registered for new connections.

As per the official statement, retail prices for petrol and diesel remain unchanged despite the global spike in oil prices. It added that adequate stocks of the two fuels are available at all petrol pumps of public sector oil companies, including Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL across the country.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas was taking steps to ensure the uninterrupted availability of petroleum products and LPG across the country, despite the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. It has advised citizens to avoid panic purchases of petrol, diesel, and LPG and rely on official sources for correct information.

Also, LPG consumers are requested to use digital booking platforms and avoid visiting distributors.
