Puducherry records first result of counting day: AINRC’s N Rangasamy wins Thattanchavady seat

The first result of the counting process in Puducherry came from Thattanchavady constituency, where early trends quickly turned into a confirmed win. N Rangasamy of AINRC secured a comfortable lead over his opponents.

In the early hours of counting across states, Puducherry recorded its first confirmed result, and it came from Assembly Constituency 9 – Thattanchavady. After four rounds of counting out of four, the seat was decisively won by N Rangasamy of the All India NR Congress (AINRC).

Rangasamy secured total of 10,024 votes and finished with lead of 4,441 votes.

Complete vote tally

N Rangasamy topped the chart with 10,024 votes, while his nearest competitor E Vinayagam of Neyam Makkal Kazhagam managed 5,583 votes, trailing by 4,441 votes.

Independent candidate K Sethu, also known as Sethuselvam, received 3,984 votes and fell behind by 6,040 votes.

Veteran leader Ve Vaithilingam of Indian National Congress ended the race with 2,990 votes lagging by 7,034 votes from the winner.

Further down the list, S Karthi Kumari of Naam Tamilar Katchi secured 534 votes, while NOTA (None of the Above) registered 196 votes.

Independent candidates also saw minimal support. B Ganeshamourthy received 89 votes, Bangarammal Karunakaran got 73 votes, N Ranjithkumar secured 48 votes, K Kathiresan of Pattali Makkal Katchi received 42 votes, and M Krishnamurthy finished with 15 votes.

N Rangasamy’s long political journey

N Rangasamy is seasoned political figure in Puducherry. He currently serves as Chief Minister of the Union Territory, position he has held since May 2021.

Rangasamy previously served as Chief Minister from 2001 to 2008 and again from 2011 to 2016. He is also founding president of All India NR Congress, a party formed in 2011 after split from the Indian National Congress.

His long electoral history includes multiple phases of political shifts in Puducherry. In 1974, V Pethaperumal of Indian National Congress held influence, while 1977 saw the Janata Party rise. 1980s and 1990s witnessed presence of Janata Dal with Rangasamy himself emerging as Indian National Congress representative in 1991.

Political landscape continued to evolve through 1996, 2001, 2006. In 2011, Ashok Anand represented AINRC followed by later transitions including the 2019 by-election won by K Venkatesan of DMK before Rangasamy returned to power in 2021 under AINRC.
