Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday strongly criticised the Maharashtra government over the shocking Nasrapur rape and murder case. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, he said the state is facing a serious breakdown in law and order and accused the government of failing to protect citizens.

Raut said that criminals in the state no longer fear the law. He directly questioned Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, asking why he was spending time in election-bound states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and West Bengal while serious crimes were happening in Maharashtra.

“A 4-year-old girl was raped in this state. Criminals should fear the law. This government is responsible for this. The government is busy with VIP security and spends a month each touring Tamil Nadu, Keralam, Assam, and Bengal. Who will look after things here?” Raut said.

He also said the administration appears disconnected from ground realities and accused it of ignoring urgent law and order concerns in the state.

Ladli Behna scheme under fire

Raut further intensified his criticism by referring to the state’s “Ladli Behna Scheme,” questioning the government’s sensitivity towards victims and their families. He suggested that even the mother of the murdered child could be a beneficiary of the scheme, and raised a harsh moral question about compensation.

“Perhaps the mother of the raped and murdered child could be this government’s own ‘Ladli Behna’. Can you buy that mother’s emotions for Rs 1,500?” he asked.

He called the government “useless” and “incompetent,” accusing it of failing to handle law and order effectively. He also questioned police action at the protest site, alleging that people who were mourning and carrying the child’s body were lathi-charged instead of being supported.

“What is the police doing there? What is happening in this country? The Constitution is being violated,” Raut said during the press briefing.

About the Nasrapur crime: Child Lured, assaulted, killed

The case involves a horrific crime in Nasrapur where a 4-year-old girl was raped and murdered. According to Pune Rural Police, a 65-year-old man lured the child with food and took her to a shed, where he committed the crime.

The girl had earlier gone missing, which led her family to start searching for her. CCTV footage later showed the accused with the child, helping police identify him.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill said the accused was in custody within an hour after they got the information. He confirmed that the accused is a local resident and has a criminal background.

“The accused is a 65-year-old man who lives in the surrounding area. He lured the girl and did this… We arrested the accused within an hour of receiving information,” SP Gill said.

He also revealed that the accused has previous cases. These include Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case from 2015, and two similar criminal records. “Investigation shows he is of this tendency,” he added.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class Court in Pune sent the accused to police custody till May 7. They have booked him under POCSO and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
