The BJP-led Bihar government has decided to drop the name of Sanjay Gandhi from two key state-run institutions, even as it approved a slate of welfare and infrastructure measures, including a ₹23,165 crore provision for a power subsidy scheme.

The decisions were cleared at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Wednesday. Following the move, the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park in Patna will be known as “Patna Zoo”, while the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology has been rechristened the “Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology”.

The renaming is part of a broader set of approvals taken by the cabinet, indicating a renewed focus on welfare delivery, expansion of education facilities and infrastructure development across the state.

Named after former Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi, the Patna zoo was established in 1973. Spread over 153 acres, it houses more than 800 animals across over 110 species.

The dairy institute, set up in 1980 and accredited by ICAR, runs BTech and MTech courses in dairy technology.

Out of the 63 proposals cleared, the cabinet earmarked ₹23,165 crore for the Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayta Yojana, which provides up to 125 units of free electricity every month to consumers across Bihar.

It also approved an allocation of ₹104 crore for opening degree colleges under the Saat Nischay-3 programme in 208 blocks that currently lack such facilities.
