TMC MP Mahua Moitra cast her vote at polling booth number 120 located at Karimpur Girls High School in Nadia district during the ongoing elections. She reached the polling station in an e-rickshaw, explaining that she avoided using a motorbike as per instructions issued by the Election Commission of India.

Speaking to the media at the spot, she said that the decision to travel by e-rickshaw was simply in line with the ECI’s directions that discouraged the use of motorbikes on polling day.

Moitra described the current election as a “fight to save democracy” and raised concerns over what she claimed was large-scale deletion of voter names. She stated that around 2.7 million voters, referring to approximately 27 lakh people, had been removed from the electoral list, despite being eligible voters.

According to her, this has led to a situation where many citizens have been denied their right to vote.

She also suggested that voter participation would be unusually high this time, describing it as a form of “revenge voting.” In her view, people were turning out in large numbers to respond to what she called unfair treatment of voters. She argued that the turnout would naturally increase as people wanted to express their dissatisfaction through the ballot.

Railway connectivity issues and political confidence in Nadia region

During her interaction, Mahua Moitra also spoke about the lack of infrastructure in the region. She pointed out that the area has a population of around 10 to 12 lakh people. And yet it continues to suffer from poor connectivity. She highlighted that there is no railway link, which she said creates serious difficulties for residents.

She also mentioned that the region shares a border area, adding to its accessibility challenges. According to her, despite repeated election promises, there has been no meaningful progress on building railway connectivity. She accused BJP of repeatedly promising railway line during elections but not delivering on it.

Moitra remarked that even though the central government controls the railway ministry, no steps had been taken to address the issue. She said that if there had been genuine intent, the railway line would have already been constructed before asking for votes. Instead, she alleged, promises are made during elections and forgotten afterwards.

Despite her criticism, she expressed confidence in her party’s position. She said that the Trinamool Congress remains strong in the region and voiced certainty about continued public support. In her words, being Bengalis, people of the state would continue to stand with their own leadership and no outside force would take over the region.
