From fan base to political force: Vijay’s TVK emerges as a serious contender in Tamil Nadu

Initially dismissed as merely a gathering of fans and derided as apolitical “Tharkkuri” (illiterate), Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has rapidly moved from the margins to emerge as a significant electoral force in Tamil Nadu.

In an election marked by the absence of a strong wave either for or against the incumbent, TVK’s entry appears to have disrupted the long-standing dominance of the Dravidian duopoly of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). While analysts differ on the extent of its impact, there is broad agreement that TVK has made notable inroads, particularly into the AIADMK’s traditional vote base.

Polling day on April 23 offered visible signs of this shift. Voters supporting TVK’s whistle symbol openly expressed their preference, with enthusiasm cutting across demographics. Youth and women, including those from families historically aligned with DMK or AIADMK, as well as minority communities, were seen backing Vijay’s party. This sentiment was not confined to urban pockets but extended deep into rural areas, suggesting a wider appetite for political change.

Defying criticism about its lack of organisational strength, TVK demonstrated surprising grassroots mobilisation. Supporters voluntarily served as booth agents and campaign workers across the state—unlike the established parties, where such roles are often compensated—indicating a high level of personal commitment to the movement.

Observers draw parallels between Vijay’s political rise and the efforts of K. Annamalai, who, during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, helped expand the BJP’s vote share while contributing to a decline in AIADMK’s influence. Analysts suggest that Vijay may now be attempting a similar political repositioning, particularly challenging AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami and positioning TVK as a viable alternative.

With results expected on May 4, the focus is on whether Vijay will emerge as the “dark horse” of the election and potentially reshape Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The key question remains whether TVK can evolve into a durable Dravidian alternative or remain a momentary surge driven by charisma and public sentiment.
