Nation pays tribute to Ambedkar, leaders reaffirm commitment to equality and justice

Top leaders from across the political spectrum on Tuesday paid floral tributes to B R Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, remembering his monumental contributions to nation-building and the enduring relevance of his ideals in shaping a just and inclusive India.

Vice-President C P Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led the tributes at Ambedkar’s statue at Prerna Sthal in the Parliament House Complex. The solemn ceremony was attended by several Union Ministers, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh, Members of Parliament, former MPs and other dignitaries.

Later, the leaders gathered in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan to offer floral tributes at Ambedkar’s portrait, with Lok Sabha Secretary-General Utpal Kumar Singh also paying homage. The commemorative events were organised by the Lok Sabha Secretariat as part of the birth anniversary observances.

Addressing students participating in the “Know Your Leader” programme organised by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies, Speaker Birla described Ambedkar’s life as “a courageous saga of struggle,” highlighting how he transformed adversity into opportunity through determination and commitment. “His life, ideals, thoughts and seminal contributions to nation-building are an eternal source of inspiration for all of us,” he said.

Emphasising Ambedkar’s role as Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constituent Assembly, Birla noted that the progressive provisions enshrined in the Constitution—particularly the Right to Equality and universal adult franchise—laid the foundation of a strong democracy. “These principles continue to inspire not only India but democracies across the world,” he added.

In a message, Birla said despite facing adverse circumstances, Ambedkar rose to remarkable heights and became a beacon of hope for millions of deprived and oppressed people through his courage, hard work and dedication to education. He credited Ambedkar with embedding the values of equality, liberty, justice and fraternity into the Constitution, providing a visionary direction to the nation.

Calling upon the youth to carry forward this legacy, Birla said they are the “true ambassadors” of Ambedkar’s thoughts and urged them to work with a “Nation First” commitment, adding that their talent, innovation and dedication would help build a stronger and more developed India.

Widely regarded as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, Ambedkar played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s democratic framework and championing the rights of marginalised communities. His ideas on social justice, education and institutional reform continue to influence public discourse decades after Independence.

Leaders across parties reiterated that his philosophy remains deeply relevant in contemporary times. “His struggle and philosophy inspire us to stand against injustice, inequality and discrimination,” Birla said, adding that his life demonstrates how positive social change is possible through education, awareness and collective effort.

The commemorations reflected a shared acknowledgment of Ambedkar’s enduring legacy, with leaders asserting that his vision will continue to guide India’s journey towards a more equitable, harmonious and inclusive society.
