PM Modi hails Sanju Samson’s World Cup brilliance as a model of performing under pressure

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday singled out Sanju Samson as an exemplar of composure and excellence under pressure, pointing to the batter’s decisive contributions in India’s triumphant ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign as a lesson in focus and temperament.

Addressing party workers from Kerala, the Prime Minister said Samson’s performances during the tournament’s most critical phases reflected the qualities of a “true player”, noting a marked rise in intensity as the competition progressed into the knockout stages.

“As the crunch situation came in the tournament, his performance suddenly reached its peak,” Modi said. “From start to finish, his focus, his confidence and his intensity kept increasing. This is the identity of a true player.”

India secured the title with a commanding victory over New Zealand on March 8, successfully defending their crown and becoming the first side to win the tournament three times, having previously lifted the trophy in 2007 and 2024.

The latest triumph also marked the first time a team had won the competition on home soil and retained it in consecutive editions.

Central to that success was Samson, who amassed 321 runs in five innings at an impressive average of over 80 and an explosive strike rate nearing 200, finishing among the tournament’s leading run-scorers. His tally also surpassed Virat Kohli’s long-standing record for the most runs by an Indian in a single T20 World Cup edition.

Although he began the tournament quietly, Samson’s form surged at a decisive juncture. An unbeaten 97 against the West Indies cricket team in a must-win Super Eight fixture set the tone, followed by back-to-back scores of 89 in the semi-final against England and the final against New Zealand—innings widely credited with anchoring India’s title run.

Reflecting on those performances, Modi said Samson’s ability to rise to the occasion carried a broader message. “When the team needed him the most, he showed his best,” he said. “This is the identity of a true player.”

Samson’s exploits have since elevated him to national prominence, with his World Cup campaign frequently cited as one of the defining individual displays of the tournament. He is currently featuring in the ongoing Indian Premier League season, where he is part of the Chennai Super Kings squad.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid the IPL season, with cricket once again dominating public attention, and underscore how sporting achievement continues to be invoked in wider public discourse as a model for discipline and resilience.
