In 2024, Alka shocked everyone when she revealed she had been diagnosed with rare sensorineural nerve hearing loss. According to her, the condition came after a sudden viral attack, and it affected her ability to hear properly.

In a fresh interview with NDTV, she admitted she is still dealing with the illness. She was reportedly hesitant to discuss it, but eventually shared that recovery has been slow and difficult.

Because of this health issue, she has not accepted any new singing assignments. She explained that music composers still reach out to her, but she simply cannot take up work right now.

Padma Bhushan honour amid health battle

Earlier this year, Alka Yagnik received the prestigious Padma Bhushan from the Government of India.

When asked whether she expected the honour earlier, the singer gave a humble response: she said she didn’t really think about timing and welcomed it whenever it came. The award arrived at a time when she was quietly battling health challenges.

Last song before stepping away

Alka’s voice was last heard in the 2024 film Amar Singh Chamkila, directed by Imtiaz Ali. She sang the track Naram Kaalja, composed by AR Rahman.

Since then, she has stayed away from recording studios, focusing instead on coping with her condition.

The emotional Instagram note that started it all

Back in 2024, Alka shared message on Instagram explaining what happened. She revealed that after stepping off a flight, she suddenly couldn’t hear anything.

Doctors later diagnosed her with rare sensorineural nerve hearing loss caused by a viral attack. She described it as a “sudden, major setback” that caught her completely unaware.

She also asked fans to keep her in their prayers while she tried to come to terms with the situation. Along with that, she issued a cautionary note, warning people about exposure to loud music and excessive headphone use.
