Suspended IAS officer Vinay Choubey, who is facing investigation in a disproportionate assets case, was granted default bail by a special Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court in Ranchi after the chargesheet was not filed within the stipulated period.

Choubey had moved court seeking statutory bail on the ground that the investigating agency had failed to submit the chargesheet within the legally prescribed time.

This is the second instance in recent months in which Choubey has secured default bail. He had earlier obtained similar relief in the alleged liquor scam case after the chargesheet was not filed within time.

The development triggered a sharp political response from the Leader of the Opposition, Babulal Marandi, who accused the Hemant Soren government of shielding bigger players in the case while using the ACB selectively.

In a statement issued on Monday, Marandi alleged that despite months of investigation and repeated public claims regarding assets and irregularities, the agency had failed to file a chargesheet in time. He claimed the delay reflected either incompetence or deliberate protection of more influential persons allegedly linked to the case.

Marandi further accused the state government of misusing investigative agencies for political and administrative pressure, while failing to carry investigations to their legal conclusion.

There was no immediate response from the state government or the ACB to Marandi’s allegations.

The disproportionate assets case and the alleged liquor scam remain under investigation.
