Jammu District Magistrate on Sunday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of an accused who was under police remand in the Gandhi Nagar police station here.
The deceased, identified as Parveen Kumar, a resident of Panipat in Haryana, had been arrested from Kolkata along with four others in connection with a case involving job fraud and illegal confinement. The arrested persons were later brought here on transit remand.

According to police, the accused had been lodged in police custody since 25 March and was under remand till 30 March. Routine medical examinations were being conducted, including one earlier in the day at the Police Hospital in Jammu.

However, later on Sunday, Kumar reportedly complained of severe stomach pain. He was immediately shifted to Government Hospital, Gandhinagar, for treatment, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police maintained that all necessary precautions had been taken during custody and that the accused had been under regular medical supervision. Nevertheless, the sudden death has triggered a series of procedural steps to ascertain the exact cause.
A board of doctors is currently conducting the post-mortem examination at the Government Medical College, Jammu. Authorities confirmed that the process will be carried out in the presence of the deceased’s family members and an executive magistrate to ensure transparency.
Meanwhile, police have preserved CCTV footage and other evidence related to the custody period. An inquest has been initiated, and the District Magistrate, Jammu, has been requested to order a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Further details are awaited as investigations proceed.
