The delegation pointed out a series of irregularities in the conduct of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal. The letter mentioned that on the night of 24 February, following the publication of the first supplementary list, on the Election Commission’s Voters’ Service Portal, all voters, irrespective of their actual status, were uniformly marked as “under adjudication” or “deleted.
They mentioned that on 23 March, the WB CEO had said in a Press conference that 29 lakh cases had been cleared by Judicial Officers and would be reflected in the first supplementary roll to be released the same night. However, the rolls released so far account for only 7.5 lakh voters, indicating that a significant portion of cleared cases remains unreflected, and that the complete supplementary rolls are yet to be published by the ECI.
They pointed out the absence of any clear roadmap regarding the functioning and accessibility of appellate tribunals. The TMC also questions the appointment of police observers. They pointed out a conflict of interest with the police observer assigned to Manikchak in Malda, who has family relations with the BJP.
They put a plea for a public clarification on the misclassification of voters on the Voters’ Service Portal, daily publication of supplementary electoral rolls, and transparency in roll revisions.
