‘550 Indians return home from Iran’: EAM Jaishankar thanks Armenia for safe evacuation

More than 550 Indian nationals have been safely evacuated from Iran amid the escalating conflict in West Asia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Monday. The evacuation has been carried out through coordinated land and air routes, with neighbouring Armenia playing a key role in facilitating the movement of Indian citizens out of Iran.

According to the MEA, the Government and people of Armenia assisted India in enabling the safe transit of evacuees to India. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Monday expressed gratitude to Armenia and appreciated its cooperation during the evacuation efforts in the midst of the ongoing regional crisis.

Tensions in the region escalated after US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28 reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei along with several top military officials. In response, Iran launched drone and missile attacks targeting the United States, Israel, and allied forces across West Asia, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in the region.

First batch of students returns to Delhi

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) confirmed that the first batch of 70 Indian students evacuated from Iran had safely arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Sunday.

Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the association, said the students undertook a difficult transit route before reaching India safely. The students travelled to India on a commercial flight after transiting through Armenia and Dubai, following a lengthy land and air journey arranged in coordination with authorities.

Government evacuation efforts

The Government of India is continuing efforts to assist its citizens in Iran while also monitoring the broader impact of the conflict on shipping routes and India’s energy security.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the ministry remains in constant contact with Indian nationals in Iran and is helping those who wish to leave the country.

Key points shared by MEA:

  • Around 9,000 Indian nationals are or were in Iran, including students, seafarers, businesspeople, professionals, and pilgrims.
  • Following earlier advisories, many Indians, particularly students, have already returned to India.
  • Several nationals, including students and pilgrims in Tehran, have been relocated to safer locations within Iran.
  • The government is assisting Indian citizens travelling to Armenia and Azerbaijan so they can take commercial flights back to India.
  • Support includes help with visas, border crossings, and coordination with local authorities.
  • The Indian Embassy in Tehran remains in constant contact with the Indian community and is providing all possible assistance.
  • Indians planning to leave Iran via land borders have been urged to follow the advisory issued on March 9 by the embassy.
