A 55-year-old man, Gopalprosad Barnawala, was killed and his grandson seriously injured when a four-wheeler crashed into them near a fruit shop beside Bidhan Nagar Sub-Divisional Hospital, under New Township police station of the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate, today.
Witnesses said the speeding car, which carried a police board on its front, lost control at a sharp turn, hit a divider, and then rammed into the roadside fruit shop where Barnawala was buying fruit with his grandson. The elderly man died on the spot, while the injured child was rushed to hospital by locals.

The incident sparked agitation outside the hospital complex, with residents alleging reckless driving.
Raj Kumar Malakar, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), ADPC, confirmed that the vehicle was being driven by a retired CRPF officer. The car has been seized and the driver detained for interrogation.
The victims were residents of the Swapna Market area in Durgapur.
