Fulfilling more than a dream of the DMDK, the ruling DMK on Tuesday allotted a Rajya Sabha seat to the party.

An agreement to this effect was signed between the DMDK and the DMK in the presence of Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin.

“DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth will announce the party candidate and the filing of nomination will be done,” DMDK treasurer LK Sudheesh told reporters, adding that the agreement for Rajya Sabha berth is first part if the seat sharing deal for the Assembly election. The number of seats to be earmarked for the DMDK is yet to be determined.

This development has prompted the Congress to take a decision on whether it falls in line and remains in alliance with the DMK. With the deadline for filing of nominations for the biennial election to the Upper House of Parliament coming to a close on March 5 (Thursday), time is running out for both the Congress and the DMK.

For the DMDK, it is a moment of ecstasy as was very much visible with Suresh, brother of Premalatha. He is the likely candidate of the party.

Since 2009, the DMDK had contested four Lok Sabha elections but could not make entry into Parliament. In the 2020 and 2024 it had faced the elections in alliance with the AIADMK on the promise of a Rajya Sabha berth, which, however, was not honoured.
