A late-night shooting incident in Kolkata left a 23-year-old youth critically injured, triggering panic in the neighbourhood and a police hunt for the accused.

The injured youth has been admitted to SSKM Hospital, where his condition is stated to be serious.

According to sources at Lalbazar, the chain of events began on Monday evening following a dispute between a group of local youths and another young man in the Beniapukur police station area.

The altercation reportedly escalated as the night progressed.

Around midnight, the assailant allegedly opened fire, targeting Mohammad Niaz alias Raja, aged 23.

Two rounds were fired, both of which hit the youth in the leg.

He collapsed on the spot, bleeding profusely. Local residents rushed to his help and arranged for his immediate transportation to hospital, where he was admitted in an emergency condition.

Local sources said the injured youth is a resident of the Tiljala Road area and was attacked close to his home on Monday night.

The firing incident has left residents of the locality shaken, with many expressing concerns over safety and law and order in the area.

Police officials said the statement of the injured youth is being recorded.

The accused has already been identified, and efforts are on to arrest him at the earliest.

A senior officer of Kolkata Police said raids are being conducted at multiple locations, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the shooting.
