Delhi Police today sought seven days’ custody of Indian Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Chib for further probe in connection with the shirtless protest at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. The IYC chief, after his arrest earlier today, was brought to the court of the Judicial Magistrate at Patiala House Court. However, the Delhi Court reserved its order on the police plea seeking Chib’s custody for seven days, and said it will pronounce the decision at 12:30 pm.
At the court, the Delhi Police submitted that Chib is the mastermind, who hatched the conspiracy and provided the logistics, maybe funds, to the protestors. The prosecution claimed that the workers entered the venue, raised slogans, and assaulted police personnel when stopped, attempting to disrupt the atmosphere.

Delhi Police told the court that the accused attempted to damage India’s image on a global stage, noting that a large number of foreign delegates were present at the venue during the incident. The prosecution argued that the alleged actions had potential international ramifications.
On its request for seven days’ custody, Delhi police said that it needs time as the other accused are in different states of Jammu, UP, and Himachal Pradesh.
Senior advocate Sanjoy Ghosh, who appeared for Udai Bhanu Chib, told the court that the accused persons went to the Summit without arms, even without a lathi. He further said that calling this case a riot-like situation is totally wrong. He told the court, “In a city where people are being murdered, the police are recovering the t-shirts. This is really a downfall.”
Asserting that Chib joined the investigation twice without evading, the advocate for the accused requested that the court should not grant custody in a mechanical manner.
As per Delhi Police sources, the shirtless protest case has been transferred to the Delhi Police Crime Branch. The Inter-State Crime Branch will conduct further investigations into the matter.
Arrest of IYC chief under multiple BNS sections
The IYC National President has been arrested under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including section 196 for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, or language, which is a non-bailable offence.
Chib was taken into custody after several rounds of questioning over the protest. The interrogation lasted nearly fifteen hours at the Tilak Marg police station. Allegedly, Chib didn’t cooperate during the questioning and attempted to mislead investigators, police sources told IANS. Officials claimed they have sufficient evidence against him.
