Opening week slump: ‘Assi’ and ‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’ show no significant jump in box office collections
Theatres expected a busy weekend, but the crowd turnout stayed surprisingly thin across key centres. Trade circles are now watching Sunday numbers closely to see if either film can recover from the slow start.
The box office mood this weekend is… awkwardly silent. Two much-talked-about films walked in with buzz, big names, and big hopes. But the cash registers? They are barely whispering. Yes, we are talking about ‘Assi’ and ‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’, both struggling to impress audiences in their very first weekend.
Taapsee Pannu’s film ‘Assi’ was expected to open strong. After all, it comes from director Anubhav Sinha, whose past films created strong conversations. The pre-release buzz was loud, social media chatter was high, and expectations were sky high.

But the reality? Quite dull.
The film opened with just ₹1 crore on day one. Trade experts already sensed trouble, and sadly, Saturday did not bring any magical jump. According to Sacnilk data, ‘Assi’ collected only around ₹1.6 crore on its second day. That means the total India net collection after two days is just ₹2.6 crore.
Theatres, especially in the Hindi belt, saw very low footfall. The occupancy on Saturday was recorded at only 10.14 percent. Yes, barely any crowd.
What makes this even more shocking is the comparison with Taapsee’s previous release ‘Khel Khel Mein’. That film had earned ₹2.05 crore on its second day alone. ‘Assi’ couldn’t even reach that mark.
Right now, the film is clearly struggling to pick up speed at the box office, and the first weekend trend is looking weak.
‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’ also loses its romantic spark
Meanwhile, the romantic drama ‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’ is also not enjoying a dream run. Starring Mrunal Thakur and Siddhant Chaturvedi, the film had a decent concept and good chemistry buzz. But numbers tell a different love story. A sad one.
The film opened on Friday with ₹1.25 crore. Not a disaster, but not impressive either. Trade hoped that Saturday would bring a romantic boost. Sadly, that did not happen.
On day two, the film earned only ₹1.60 crore. So, the two-day India net total now stands at ₹2.85 crore. For a fresh pairing and a romantic drama, these figures are quite low.
Clearly, the audience is not rushing to theatres for this love story. The growth is minimal, and the film is yet to show any strong momentum.
First weekend verdict
Both films entered cinemas with good promotion and decent curiosity. But the first weekend trend is not looking promising. Neither ‘Assi’ nor ‘Do Deewane Seher Mein’ has shown the kind of jump that trade usually expects after opening day.
If Sunday numbers do not improve drastically, both films may end their first weekend on disappointing note.
Despite glowing praise, Anubhav Sinha admits Assi struggled to pull larger crowds to theatres. He says words like “disturbing” and audience warnings made some viewers hesitate, even as conversations around the film grew louder.
A quiet theatre run is now turning into a digital comeback as this romantic drama heads to Netflix. Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur’s love story finally gets a fresh chance to find its audience online.
A gripping courtroom drama unfolds as 'Assi; moves from theatres to its digital premiere. The film dives deep into a disturbing legal case that exposes cracks in the justice system and the human cost behind statistics.
