PM Modi in Malaysia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia this weekend was not just about meetings and agreements. It was also about warmth, friendship, and memories that, as he said himself, will last a lifetime.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi openly expressed his deep gratitude for the special welcome he received in Kuala Lumpur. Speaking after the ceremonial reception, he said the hospitality shown by Malaysia went far beyond formal customs.

What stood out for him was how beautifully Malaysian life and culture were presented during the ceremony.
“I express my heartfelt gratitude to you,” PM Modi said thanking Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his team. He added that the care, planning, and creativity behind the welcome would always remain in his memory.
Ceremonial reception at Perdana Putra
The main official welcome took place at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya, the office complex of the Malaysian Prime Minister. PM Modi was given a full ceremonial reception including a Guard of Honour.
This formal setting also became the stage for delegation-level talks between the two leaders. The talks signalled a clear intention from both sides to take their partnership forward with renewed energy.
PM Modi shares the moment online
Soon after the ceremony, PM Modi shared glimpses of the welcome on social media platform X.
“India and Malaysia continue to deepen a partnership rooted in trust, friendship and shared aspirations,” he wrote.
A personal airport greeting
The warmth of the visit began even before the official meetings. On Saturday, when PM Modi arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim personally welcomed him at the airport.
Malaysian Minister of Human Resources Ramanan Ramakrishnan and Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman bin Awang Sauni were also present to receive the Indian Prime Minister. The arrival ceremony included a red-carpet welcome along with traditional music and dance performances, celebrating the shared cultural roots of India and Malaysia.
Moved by the moment, PM Modi later posted that he was “deeply touched” by the airport welcome and was looking forward to conversations that would strengthen friendship between the two countries.
Leaders travel together, community celebrates
One of the most symbolic moments of the day came when PM Modi and Anwar Ibrahim travelled together in the same vehicle to attend an Indian community programme in Kuala Lumpur. The Malaysian Prime Minister also attended the event, underlining the importance of people-to-people ties.
PM Modi shared another update online calling it celebration of India-Malaysia connection. For the large Indian-origin community in Malaysia, the moment carried special meaning and pride.
Talks aimed at stronger cooperation
After the welcoming ceremonies, the two leaders held detailed bilateral discussions. These talks are expected to lead to several agreements in different areas, from defence and security to trade, innovation, and new technologies.
In his departure statement before leaving India, PM Modi had already outlined his goals. He spoke about strengthening defence ties, boosting economic cooperation, and exploring new areas of collaboration. The focus, he said, was on taking the comprehensive strategic partnership to the next level.
A visit with a rich agenda
The Ministry of External Affairs also stressed the importance of the visit. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described it as carrying a “rich agenda” that would give a major boost to the special partnership between India and Malaysia.
According to him, the visit is expected to add strong momentum to the already close and multi-layered relationship.
A relationship rooted in history
This is Prime Minister Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since the two countries upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024. India and Malaysia share deep historical, cultural, civilisational links.
These ties are further strengthened by Malaysia’s Indian-origin population. This stands at about 2.9 million people. It is the third-largest overseas Indian community in the world and plays key role in connecting the two nations at human level.
