“I will first dedicate this honour to my mother,” he told PTI, his voice full of emotion. “She sacrificed so much and paved the way for my journey that spans more than forty years. I also share this honour with my family, including my son Mishuk. But ultimately, this is for my countless audiences who made everything possible.”

Family pride and fond memories

The actor didn’t waste a moment and immediately called his father, the legendary Biswajit Chatterjee. “He said, ‘So you have got it. I am so proud of you,’” Prosenjit recalled.

But the moment was also tinged with nostalgia. He spoke fondly of his late friend and director, Rituparno Ghosh, who played a crucial role in shaping his journey into critically acclaimed, realistic cinema. “I miss Rituparno a lot today. He helped me explore a side of acting that I will always cherish,” he added.

When asked if the Padma Shri felt long overdue, Prosenjit kept it humble and philosophical. “I don’t think about timing. Icons like Soumitra Chatterjee were honoured at different stages. What matters is that the government has recognised my work. I am deeply thankful,” he said.

Bengal’s artistic pride

It’s not just Prosenjit who’s shining this Republic Day. Pt Kumar Bose, the renowned tabla maestro, also received the Padma Shri and dedicated it to his wife and family.

“By honouring me, the government has honoured other great classical vocalists and instrumentalists of West Bengal,” he said.

This announcement came a day before Republic Day 2026, when India celebrates the nation’s unity and achievements. A total of 131 Padma awards were announced this year across fields like literature, art, sports, medicine, and agriculture.
