In a significant push to urban infrastructure in Nadia district, construction work on three key roads under the West Bengal government’s Pathashree project was formally inaugurated on Thursday in the Ghurni-Gharami Para area of Krishnagar municipality.

The initiative is expected to ease long-standing connectivity problems and improve everyday mobility for local residents.

The three roads taken up in the first phase include Gharami Para Lane, Kaibarta Para Lane, and Tarak Das Banerjee Lane ~ all located in densely populated neighbourhoods where residents have long complained of poor road conditions, especially during the monsoon.

Speaking on the occasion, municipal administrator Ms Choudhury said that this was the first time Krishnagar municipality was undertaking such a large-scale road construction programme using direct state government funding under the Pathashree scheme. “A total of 27 roads across Krishnagar are being constructed under the project, under the supervision of the MED (Municipal Engineering Directorate). Today’s inauguration marks the beginning of work on three of those roads in the Ghurni area,” she said.

According to officials, the estimated cost for the construction of the three roads stands at approximately Rs 78 lakh. The broader project, once completed, is expected to significantly improve internal connectivity within the town and reduce daily commuting difficulties faced by residents.

Minister Ujjwal Biswas said the Pathashree project reflected the state government’s focus on strengthening grassroots infrastructure. “Good roads are essential for economic activity and quality of life. The government is committed to ensuring that urban areas like Krishnagar receive sustained infrastructure support,” he said.

Local residents welcomed the move, expressing hope that the new roads would finally put an end to years of inconvenience caused by damaged and narrow lanes. With work now underway, the municipality expects visible progress in the coming months, paving the way ~ literally and figuratively ~ for smoother movement across Krishnagar.
