Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said the Bharatiya Janata Party had recorded an “unprecedented victory” in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, emerging as the single-largest party.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Fadnavis said the BJP and its alliance partners had secured a clear majority in around 25 of the 29 civic bodies across Maharashtra, including Mumbai. He credited the outcome to organisational strength and voter backing for the ruling coalition’s development agenda.

“I am very happy that the Bharatiya Janata Party has achieved an unprecedented victory in Maharashtra. The Bharatiya Janata Party and our alliance partners have secured a clear majority in about 25 of the 29 places, including Mumbai. The BJP has emerged as the single-largest party, and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Maharashtra and all BJP workers,” he said.

What Fadnavis said, and why the BJP believes it won

The chief minister said the results reflected public faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and acceptance of the National Democratic Alliance’s governance model in the state.

“This victory is a testament to Maharashtra’s faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This victory is the result of the hard work of all our workers, especially an endorsement by the people of the development agenda we have pursued…,” Fadnavis told ANI.

The BJP’s leadership pointed to visible infrastructure projects in Mumbai as key factors. Party leaders argued that work on the Metro Aqua Line and the Coastal Road helped the saffron alliance counter campaigns centred on regional identity and language.

During the campaign, leaders such as Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray sought to mobilise voters around the Marathi manoos plank. The BJP, however, maintained that civic governance and delivery of projects resonated more strongly with urban voters.

PM Modi’s message and the road ahead for Mahayuti

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the BJP–Shiv Sena-led victory in Maharashtra’s civic polls, describing it as an endorsement of “pro-people good governance”.

On X, he wrote: “Thank you, Maharashtra! The dynamic people of the state bless the NDA’s pro-people, good governance agenda! The results of various municipal corporation elections indicate that the NDA’s bond with the people of Maharashtra has further deepened. Our track record and vision for development have struck a chord. My gratitude to the people across Maharashtra. This is a vote to add momentum to progress and celebrate the glorious culture the state is associated with.”

Celebrations followed in Mumbai. In a light-hearted response to Raj Thackeray’s earlier ‘rasamalai’ jibe at Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai, party workers distributed rasmalai at the BJP office.

Addressing workers later, Fadnavis said the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance was confident of forming mayors in 25 municipal corporations following the results.
