The world of daytime television is in mourning. Anthony Geary, man who turned Luke Spencer into one of the most unforgettable characters in TV history, has died at the age of 78. For millions of fans who grew up watching ‘General Hospital’, Geary was a daily presence.
According to reports, Geary passed away on Sunday in Amsterdam. Sources suggest that complications related to a planned surgery may have played a role, though his official cause of death has not yet been announced.

From Utah dreams to Hollywood sets
Anthony Geary’s journey to stardom did not begin under bright studio lights. Born in Utah, he first fell in love with theatre and earned a scholarship to the University of Utah. Acting was a calling for him.

In the 1970s, Geary packed his bags and moved to Los Angeles chasing the dream shared by countless young performers. Like many actors of his time, he began with small roles.
Viewers spotted him on popular shows such as ‘The Partridge Family’, ‘The Mod Squad’, ‘All in the Family’, ‘Bright Promise’, and ‘The Young and the Restless’.
The birth of Luke Spencer
In 1978, ‘General Hospital’ producer and director Gloria Monty saw something special in Geary. Together, they shaped the character of Lucas Lorenzo Spencer, better known as Luke. Monty once described Luke as an “antihero”, a man who often did the wrong things but for the right reasons.
Luke and Laura: A love story for the ages
Geary’s chemistry with co-star Genie Francis, who played Laura, became legendary. Luke and Laura were not just a soap couple; they were a cultural moment. Their on-screen wedding in 1981 became a TV event like no other drawing an estimated 30 million viewers.
For many fans, Luke and Laura defined romance on daytime TV.
Leaving, returning, making history
Geary first stepped away from ‘General Hospital’ in 1983 but couldn’t stay gone for long. He returned in 1991, this time also playing Luke’s lookalike cousin, Bill Eckert. His final regular appearance on the show aired on July 27, 2015.
Over his long career, Geary won eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Actor and received nine more nominations.
Reacting to the news, ‘General Hospital’ executive producer Frank Valentini said the entire GH family was heartbroken. He praised Geary as a brilliant actor whose legacy would continue through future cast members.
