In an exemplary gesture, a centenarian gynaecologist from Odisha has donated Rs 3.4 crore of her self-earned savings to the AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology as she turned 100 on Friday.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar has been honoured with an extraordinary gesture of trust and benevolence as celebrated obstetrician and gynaecologist Prof K Laxmi Bai, on the occasion of her centenary birthday, donated Rs 3.4 crore to the national institute, said the hospital authorities.

Having received her medical degree in 1945 and served the nation selflessly until retiring from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur in 1986, Prof. Laxmi Bai’s contribution reflects her unwavering faith in the capabilities, ethics, and service commitment of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, they said.

Conveying gratitude on behalf of the entire AIIMS fraternity and the people of Odisha, Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas expressed heartfelt appreciation for this noble act. “Prof. K. Laxmi Bai’s extraordinary gesture is not only a blessing but a powerful acknowledgment of AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s continual efforts in high-quality patient care, medical education, and advanced research,” said Dr. Biswas.
The donated amount will be established as a corpus fund, the interest from which will be utilized for research in Gynaecological malignancy, providing community oncology services to the poor and downtrodden, strengthening preventive oncology initiatives.
To ensure optimal and transparent utilization of the corpus, an Expert Supervisory Committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Executive Director.
As part of the centenary celebrations, a team from AIIMS Bhubaneswar led by Medical Superintendent & Officiating Executive Director Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida, along with senior faculty members Dr. Manoj Kumar Mohanty (HoD, FMT), Dr. Saubhagya Kumar Jena (HoD, O&G), Dr. Pruthwiraj Sethi, Dibya Ranjan Pattnaik, and Kamal Kishore Mahapatra, visited Prof. Laxmi Bai at her residence in Bhabanagar, Berhampur. They conveyed gratitude on behalf of AIIMS Bhubaneswar and extended warm wishes on her 100th birthday.
The celebration, organized by family members, was attended by several academic stalwarts, medical professionals, and dignitaries, reflecting the towering legacy of Prof. Laxmi Bai and the deep respect she commands across generations.
President Droupadi Murmu, has conveyed her warm wishes to Prof. K. Laxmi Bai on the occasion of her birthday and has lauded her extraordinary gesture of donating her self-earned savings for the cause of cancer care.
In an official letter addressed to Prof. Laxmi Bai, the Hon’ble President appreciated her noble contribution and expressed confidence that AIIMS Bhubaneswar will make the best and most effective use of her generous support to strengthen cancer care services for poor and underserved communities.
The President added that the participation of compassionate and responsible citizens like Prof. Laxmi Bai serves as an inspiration for others across the country to come forward and support the government’s initiatives in public health and social welfare.
