Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in the country to have no increase in electricity rates for the sixth consecutive year. The Power Corporation had proposed a 45% increase in electricity rates this year, arguing that power companies were incurring a loss of approximately ₹25,000 crore this financial year.
But the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission ( UPERC), releasing its order on Saturday, claimed that the state’s electricity consumers already had a surplus of ₹33,122 crore with the power companies.

Following this decision, the Power Corporation will not be able to increase electricity rates, directly benefiting millions of consumers.
After this historic decision, Awadhesh Kumar Verma, president of the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council and Member of the State Advisory Committee, met with Arvind Kumar, Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, and Sanjay Kumar Singh, member, and expressed his heartfelt gratitude. He stated that the commission has delivered a very fair decision in the interest of consumers.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Council also won a victory in the Noida Power Company (NPCL) case. Accepting the arguments presented by the Consumer Council, the commission decided to keep Noida Power Company’s electricity rates unchanged. Additionally, the 10% discount offered to consumers will continue. This is a significant relief for millions of consumers in the Noida region.
