Nothing OS 4.0 Android 16 rollout begins: Features, improvements, and supported devices

After months of anticipation and beta testing, Nothing OS 4.0 is finally ready to leave the lab and land in the hands of users. The company first teased this Android 16-based update back in September, and since then, fans have been eagerly trying out the open beta builds.

Now Nothing has confirmed the moment many have been waiting for. The stable release will start rolling out on November 21, 2025.

Alongside the rollout, Nothing promises a “full announcement,” likely shedding more light on the features, improvements, and devices that will be supported.

When and how the update will arrive

Nothing has shared the official date for the update but has kept some details under wraps. For example, it’s not yet clear whether all supported phones will receive Nothing OS 4.0 at once or in stages.

Industry patterns suggest a gradual rollout, and if history is any guide, the Nothing Phone 3, the brand’s top-tier device, will probably be among the first to get it.

In a brief post on X, the company shared a cryptic but exciting message: “Nothing OS 4.0. Let your phone bring flow to your life. General Release. 21 Nov.”

Nothing also expressed gratitude to beta testers on its community forum.

Devices expected to get the update first

While Nothing has not published a complete list of eligible devices, clues come from the beta program. Early adopters can expect the following devices in the first wave:

– Nothing Phone 2
– Nothing Phone 3
– Nothing Phone 2a
– Nothing Phone 2a Plus
– Nothing Phone 3a
– Nothing Phone 3a Pro

Other devices, including the rumored Phone 3a Lite, are likely to follow in the coming weeks. Even devices under Nothing’s CMF sub-brand which also run Nothing OS are expected to receive updates as part of the company’s ongoing software support strategy.

What’s new in Nothing OS 4.0

Built on Android 16, Nothing OS 4.0 introduces a mix of system-wide upgrades. It also comes with AI-driven enhancements and device-specific features. Some of its absolute key highlights include:

– Extra Dark Mode: It reduces eye strain. Nighttime use? Bring it on!

– Pop-Up View: It lets users open floating windows for multitasking. Yes, you do not have to leave the current app.

– 2×2 Quick Settings Tile: It simplifies your access to frequently used settings.

– New Lock Screen Styles: It adds two additional clock layouts for sleek personalisation.

– Essential Apps & Widgets: Users can now share custom widgets through the Nothing Playground portal.

The update also brings camera improvements. The Nothing Phone 2 series gains the Stretch camera mode. It was previously exclusive to the Phone 3.

Meanwhile the Lock Glimpse widget provides curated content and timely notifications right on the lock screen. On the Phone 3a series, this feature is off by default to respect user privacy preferences.
