After Cyclone Montha wreaked havoc in the southern states, it weakened into a depression (the remnant of Severe Cyclonic Storm Montha) yesterday. The depression has now further weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over east Vidarbha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh, and a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea, said the 9 am update of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday.
“The depression [remnant of Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’] over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining Vidarbha moved north-northwestwards and weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over east Vidarbha and adjoining south Chhattisgarh at 0530 hrs IST today, the 30th of October 2025,” the IMD said.

It is likely to move nearly northwards towards east Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Chhattisgarh, and weaken into a low-pressure area during the next 24 hours, the IMD added.
Meanwhile, the depression over the east-central Arabian Sea moved westwards with a speed of 13 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST today, the 30th of October 2025, over the same region, near latitude 17.9°N and longitude 68.2°E, about 400 km southwest of Veraval (Gujarat), 510 km west-southwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra), and 660 km west-northwest of Panjim (Goa), the IMD said.
It is likely to move nearly westwards across the east-central Arabian Sea during the next 36 hours, the update added.
Rain alert in UP and Bihar
Bihar
After pounding the southern states with gusty winds, rain, and severe storms, Montha is likely to impact Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with rain and lower temperatures.
The Patna Meteorological Centre has issued a heavy rain alert for Bihar from October 30. Some districts can expect heavy showers and gusty winds between October 30 and 31.
With the heavy rainfall alert, the maximum temperature across the state is expected to fall by four to six degrees Celsius over the next three days and remain unchanged thereafter. The minimum temperature, however, is expected to stay steady over the next five days.
On Wednesday, Patna recorded light rainfall, along with Motihari, Dehri, Gaya, Aurangabad, Buxar, Kaimur, Siwan, Sheikhpura, and Bhagalpur. The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts in north Bihar on Thursday, even prompting the cancellation of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s public meeting in Chhapra.
A very heavy rainfall alert was issued for West and East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani, and Supaul. Meanwhile, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall was issued for 11 districts: Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, Vaishali, Sheohar, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa, and Madhepura. A warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning was also issued across the state.
Gusty winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30–40 km/h. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue for the next two days. Heavy rain warnings have been issued for Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, West Champaran, Purnia, Katihar, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Saharsa, and Madhepura on Friday.
“Light to moderate rain is likely at most places on October 30 and 31, and heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur at some places in the northern and southern districts,” an IMD official said.
Western UP dry, eastern belt to see rain
Cold conditions are expected to intensify further. While western UP is expected to remain dry despite cloudy weather, the effect of Cyclone Montha could bring thunderstorms to areas such as Prayagraj, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Ghazipur, and Mau. Patchy light rain is also predicted in Azamgarh, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Chandauli, Jaunpur, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, and Chitrakoot. Rain is also likely in some pockets of Jhansi, Kanpur, and Lucknow, which may trigger a dip in temperatures and the onset of fog.
