The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is taking a major leap towards Smart Tourism and Digital Governance with the introduction of AI-based smart surveillance systems at the state’s three most-visited spiritual destinations — Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur.

The initiative aims to combine technology with tradition, ensuring a safer and smarter experience for millions of devotees visiting these sacred sites. Under the plan, AI-powered cameras will be installed to track real-time footfall, analyze crowd density, and help in effective management of security, cleanliness, and amenities.

“Our goal is to make Uttar Pradesh a model for Smart Tourism in India. With AI technology, we can ensure that devotees and tourists experience faith with comfort, safety, and efficiency. This step will make temple management more responsive and data-driven,” UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said here on Wednesday.

Through this project, AI-enabled footfall counting systems will be installed at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Ram Temple, and Gorakhnath Temple. These systems will record visitor data in real time, allowing authorities to assess crowd size and flow with precision.

The selected implementing agency will be responsible for the design, installation, data analytics, and maintenance of the system. Using AI-powered facial recognition, behavioral analytics, and an emergency response mechanism, the technology will monitor crowd patterns and provide instant alerts in case of emergencies.

Singh said the initiative will bring “a new era of innovation in temple tourism,” helping both pilgrims and administrators. “Accurate data on visitor numbers will help in improving sanitation, crowd management, and public facilities. It will also guide the state in making informed policy decisions for tourism development.”

The system will provide insights into peak hours and visitor patterns, ensuring better preparedness and safety measures for all.

This marks one of the first large-scale applications of artificial intelligence in religious tourism in India, reflecting Uttar Pradesh’s forward-looking approach.

“Uttar Pradesh is home to faith, heritage, and innovation,” Singh said, adding, “By embracing technology like AI, we are not only improving management at our sacred sites but also redefining how people experience pilgrimage with devotion and trust.”
