Remembering the Iron Man of India
Born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was not just a freedom fighter but also an absolute visionary who shaped the foundation of modern India. He was a lawyer by profession but they the journey took a turn when he joined Mahatma Gandhi’s movement; first as the leader of the Kheda Satyagraha in 1918.
His work during the Bardoli Satyagraha of 1928 made him a national hero. It also earned him the affectionate title of “Sardar”.
After India gained independence, Patel took on the historic challenge of uniting more than 560 princely states under one huge flag. First as a Deputy Prime Minister and then Home Minister, he put his efforts to turn the dream of a united India into reality.
Because of his firm leadership and unbreakable resolve, we rightly remember him as the Iron Man of India.
Why we celebrate the day
National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was introduced in 2014 to honour Patel’s contribution to the nation. The day is celebrated every year on October 31. The day gently reminds citizens of India of the importance of unity and collective strength of the masses.
Schools, colleges, and government institutions across the country organize a host of events. These range from debates and art competitions to cultural programs and public gatherings. All of this takes place to spread the message of unity.
The Statue of Unity as a towering tribute
The Statue of Unity that stands tall at 182 meters is the world’s tallest statue. It was unveiled on October 31, 2018 in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The statue overlooks the Narmada River in Gujarat’s Kevadia. And, it has become one of India’s top tourist attractions.
