MTV shutting down: Remember rushing home after school or college just to catch your favorite pop song hits on MTV? For us millennials, the channel was the ultimate destination for music, pop culture, and latest trends. But times are changing. And, MTV is changing with them.
Paramount Global announced on October 12, 2025, that several of its music-focused channels MTV 80s, MTV Music, Club MTV, MTV 90s, and MTV Live will shut down worldwide by December 31, 2025.

Before you panic, don’t worry. MTV HD is staying put. Reality TV lovers can continue to indulge in guilty pleasures like “Jersey Shore” or “Teen Mom” because these shows will remain the network’s core offering.
Why are MTV’s music channels closing?
The reasons behind the shutdown are clear. Viewing habits have drastically changed over the years. Platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Spotify now dominate music consumption. People no longer wait for scheduled music programs. Instead, they stream songs and videos on demand. This transformation has caused many traditional music channels to lose viewers.
Recently some of MTV’s more niche channels like MTV 90s and MTV Music drew only modest audiences. In July 2025, MTV Music had only around 1.3 million viewers. MTV 90s attracted just 900,000.
Numbers like these are a far cry from the glory days of the 1990s and early 2000s. Back then music videos were appointment viewing for millions.
Another factor is corporate strategy. Paramount Global merged with Skydance Media earlier in 2025. A part of the post-merger restructuring included a massive $500 million global cost-cutting plan. Shutting down music channels fit neatly into these savings measures. This allowed the company to focus on expanding its Paramount+ streaming service.
