Preparations for the by-election in the Ghatsila assembly constituency under Jamshedpur Lok Sabha are in the final stages. The seat became vacant after the death of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha legislator and former minister Ramdas Soren on 15 August 2025.
The Election Commission has completed the process of special summary revision of electoral rolls, and security arrangements are being drawn up.

East Singhbhum District Election Officer Karn Satyarthi said the voter list revision that began on July 1 has been completed. After scrutiny, 4,456 new names have been added. The total number of voters in the constituency is now 2,55,823, which includes 1,24,899 male voters, 1,30,921 female voters, and three third-gender voters. In the draft list published on September 2, the constituency had 2,51,367 voters.
Chief Electoral Officer K Ravi Kumar confirmed that in the final list, 1,585 male and 2,871 female voters were added. The constituency earlier had 291 polling stations. With nine new polling stations created and three merged, the total number has risen to 300. More than 1,200 booths with high voter strength have been rationalised. Officials said that polling stations in sensitive locations will be under special watch. Considering that parts of Ghatsila have reported incidents of Naxal activity in the past, extra vigilance is being maintained. A proposal has been sent for the deployment of 10 companies of the CRPF to ensure peaceful polling.
The district administration has also noted the challenges posed by recent heavy rainfall that damaged rural roads. Alternative arrangements are being made to facilitate voter access, and polling stations are being planned within a two-km radius for residents.
The by-election is expected to see a direct contest between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the Bharatiya Janata Party. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has projected Somesh Soren, son of the late Ramdas Soren, as its candidate, while the Bharatiya Janata Party is considering multiple names, including Babulal Soren, son of Chompai Soren, who contested in 2024, along with Lakhanchandra Mardi and Dr Sunita Devdut Soren. In 2024, Ramdas Soren secured 98,356 votes against Babulal Soren’s 75,910.
The Ghatsila constituency has a history of changing political hands. It was with Congress in 2005, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 2009, Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014, and again Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 2019 and 2024. Santhal tribal voters constitute nearly 48 per cent of the electorate, with Munda, Ho, and Bengali communities also playing decisive roles.
The Election Commission has clarified that the by-election must be held within six months of the vacancy. Final electoral rolls have been made available in hard and soft copies to recognised political parties and published at all polling stations and election offices.
In the upcoming poll, both Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Bharatiya Janata Party will test their strength in the Kolhan region. The result will be significant for the ruling party in Jharkhand and for the Bharatiya Janata Party, whose leaders, including four former chief ministers — Chompai Soren, Raghubar Das, Arjun Munda, and Madhu Koda — have stakes in the outcome.
