Alleging a “conspiracy” behind the tragic Karur stampede that killed at least 39 people, actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Sunday moved the Madras High Court seeking an independent probe into the incident.

In the plea filed before the Madras High Court bench led by Justice M Dhandapani, the TVK alleged that there was a conspiracy behind the stampede on Saturday and sought an impartial court-monitored probe by an independent agency.

Udhayanidhi said that appropriate action will be taken by the government based on the Jagadeesan commission’s report.

Earlier in the day, Vijay announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 2 lakh for each of the injured, following the tragic stampede that claimed at least 39 lives during his political rally in Karur.

Describing his personal anguish, Vijay said, “The faces of all of you whom I have met keep flashing through my mind. The more I think of my loved ones who show affection and care, the more my heart slips further from its place.”

Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured, Vijay also assured that his party, TVK, will provide all necessary support to those undergoing treatment.
