In a major crackdown ahead of the festive season, the Delhi Police on Saturday said it has seized a massive over 3,580.4 kilograms of illegal firecrackers from the premises of a residence in Rajouri Garden.

The three members of the household — Sushil Kakkar (53), Upasana Kakkar (50), and Shivam Kakkar (28) — were caught red-handed while repacking the firecrackers, into smaller consignments for sale in Delhi, it said.

Acting on credible intelligence, the team conducted a raid at a residence in Vishal Enclave early on Thursday.

“During the raid, officers found firecrackers stored throughout the house, including the kitchen, indicating that the family was using their home as a makeshift warehouse,” said Darade Sharad Bhaskar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West).

The explosives were procured from Meerut, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad and were intended for high-profit sale in Delhi, despite the Supreme Court’s ban on firecrackers, he added.

The accused, who runs a namkeen and eatables shop in Moti Nagar, has been booked under the Explosive Act & 125/288 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Rajouri Garden police station.

The seizure, the officer said, not only enforces compliance with court directives but also prevents a potentially large-scale fire hazard in a heavily populated area.

The team is investigating further to trace the full network behind the illegal trade of firecrackers in Delhi, DCP Bhaskar added.
