The liver and kidneys of a 43-year-old accident victim were harvested at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here and sent to different hospitals for transplantation on Wednesday.

Bablu Dhal of Barada village in Bhadrak district had met with an accident near Tangi in Cuttack district on September 18, after which he was undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College Hospital at Cuttack.

He was shifted to IMS and SUM Hospital two days later, but was declared brain dead on September 22. Dhal’s family members then decided to donate his organs, saying it could help save the lives of other patients.

The hospital authorities subsequently got in touch with the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), which paved the way for the harvesting of the liver and kidneys. While one of the kidneys was sent to SCB Medical College Hospital for transplantation, the other was taken to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar for another waiting patient. The liver was taken to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for the same purpose.

“This is the fifth time that organs have been harvested from brain-dead patients in our hospital with the approval of family members,” the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Prof. (Dr.) Pusparaj Samantasinghar said.

The deceased was accorded a guard of honour in the hospital premises before the body was handed over to the family members. Besides Prof (Dr) Samantasinghar, Prof Pushpanjali Rout, Deputy General Manager (Operations), Ms Kaberi Rani Sahu, Nursing Superintendent, Mr Sagar Paikray, Junior Hospital Administrator,, and others were present.
