The Election Commission of India Wednesday announced elections to fill five Rajya Sabha seats, four from Jammu and Kashmir and one from Punjab. As per the press note issued by the poll panel, the polling will be held on October 24, with the counting of votes scheduled for the same evening.

The four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir have remained vacant since February 2021, when the terms of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Nazir Ahmed Laway, Fayaz Ahmed Mir, and Shamsheer Singh Manhas expired. The elections will be held in three separate categories, as per the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act.

The Rajya Sabha seat from Punjab fell vacant after MP Sanjeev Arora’s resignation on July 1, this year. The by-election will be held simultaneously with the Jammu and Kashmir polls.

As per the election schedule for both Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab announced by the ECI, the notifications will be issued on October 6, the last date of filing nominations is October 13, the scrutiny of nominations will take place on October 14, and the last date of withdrawal of candidatures has been fixed as October 16.

The date of polling will be October 24 and the voting will take place between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and the counting of votes will be held on October 24, at 5:00 pm

The ECI has directed that only integrated violet color sketch pens provided by the Returning Officer shall be used for marking preferences on the ballot paper. Adequate measures will be taken to ensure free and fair elections, including close monitoring of the election process.
