“I love my country, but I don’t recognize it at this time,” Angelina Jolie said candidly at the European premiere of her latest film ‘Couture’ at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain on Sunday.

During the press conference alongside director Alice Winocour and her co-stars, Jolie emphasized her international perspective. “I’ve always lived internationally. My family is international. My life, my worldview, is equal and united,” she said. “Anything that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms for anyone, I think, is very dangerous. These are heavy times, and we have to be careful not to say things casually.”

The discussion soon shifted to ‘Couture’, in which Jolie stars as Maxine, a forty-something American film director working on a short film for Paris Fashion Week.

Amid the glamour and chaos of the fashion world, Maxine faces a personal battle: she is diagnosed with breast cancer. The storyline resonates closely with Jolie’s own life, as she underwent a preventive double mastectomy in 2013 due to her family history and the BRCA1 gene.

“I chose to have that because I lost my mother and grandmother very young,” Jolie shared. “Those are my choices. I don’t say everybody should do it that way, but it’s important to have the choice.”

She noted that the film’s story connects not just with women, but with anyone who has faced similar challenges.
