Mahalaya marks the arrival of Maa Durga on earth. Families wake up before sunrise, turning on All India Radio at 4 a.m. The magical voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra fills the air with Mahishasurmadini. For more than eight decades, his voice has been the heart of this tradition. This is the legacy which Bhadra carries. It has been a voice that brings Mahalaya to life.
Sambhu Saha, a local artist from this pandal, recalls how his childhood days were. He would eagerly switch on the radio to hear the fruitful voice of Bhadra. “It felt like the Goddess herself was speaking through him,” Saha says. Today, many young people might not know Bhadra. Traditions have changed. To keep his memory alive, the Uttar Kolikata Sarbojonin Durga Puja committee dedicates this year’s pandal to him.

The pandal is located in the own neighbourhood of Bhadra, which adds a special tribute. The walls are full of the paintings of his life. A corner recreates the old All India Radio studio where he recorded. Vintage microphones and gramophones evoke the era. Designs of radio waves add an extra bit of nostalgia.

This year is very special for this neighbourhood. For the first time, the Uttar Kolikata Sarbojonin Durga Puja pandal has a theme. All these years, there was no existence of themes. It always stayed traditional. Now, the committee has selected Birendra Krishna Bhadra as their first theme. That makes the tribute historical. It is both a beginning for the pandal and a moment to cherish for the people of his neighbourhood.
A committee member said: “We want children to understand what legacy Bhadra holds. His voice is the soul and heart of Mahalaya. The pandal is simple and powerful at the same time. Soft recordings of Mahishasurmardini play in the background. Quotes from his life are beneficial for the visitors. Every detail shows what impact he had with his voice during his presence.
The pandal opens today at 4 a.m. when radios play Bhadra’s voice. A special Chandipath begins the celebration. Local artists and schoolchildren listen to the magnificent voice of the artist. The community unites to celebrate his legacy.
Bhadra was more than a voice artist. He was a cultural icon. His calm and powerful narration of the Goddess’s battle against Mahishasura is still carved in the heart of the world. He never chased fame, but his voice became special or immortal. Today, this pandal reminds us of his gift.
As Kolkata gets decked up to celebrate Durga Puja, the pandal shines with meaning. It is not about grand lights or lavish designs. It is about gratitude and remembrance. It celebrates the voice that defines Mahalaya. With this tribute, Uttar Kolikata Sarbojonin guarantees that the legacy of Bhadra motivates generations, today and in the upcoming days.
