The Union Government has released over ₹342 crore as 15th Finance Commission grants for rural local bodies in Tamil Nadu and Assam.
For Tamil Nadu, grants for rural local bodies for FY 2025–26 have been released, with the first installment of untied grants amounting to ₹127.586 crore. These cover 2,901 eligible Gram Panchayats, 74 eligible Block Panchayats, and nine eligible District Panchayats.

For Assam, grants for FY 2024–25 amounting to ₹214.542 crore have been released, covering all 2,192 eligible Gram Panchayats, 156 eligible Block Panchayats, and 27 eligible Zilla Parishads.
The Government of India, through the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti (Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation), recommends the release of 15th Finance Commission grants to states for Rural Local Bodies (RLBs)/Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). The funds are disbursed by the Ministry of Finance in two installments each financial year.
The untied grants are meant to address location-specific needs under the 29 subjects listed in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution. These funds cannot be used for salaries or establishment costs.
The tied grants are earmarked for basic services, namely, sanitation and maintenance of ODF (Open Defecation Free) status, including management and treatment of household waste, human excreta, and faecal sludge, and supply of drinking water, rainwater harvesting, and water recycling.
