Former chief justice Sushila Karki was Friday sworn in as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal, bringing to office the country’s first woman head of government. Her appointment comes after massive youth-led protests over widespread allegations of corruption and a social media ban, which has since been withdrawn. Karki’s selection marks a rare moment of consensus in Nepali politics, and she is tasked with steering the country to the polls on March 5, 2026.
The new leadership will face challenges in navigating Nepal’s ongoing political and economic reforms. However, with India’s support, Nepal is likely to strengthen its partnership with its neighbour, focusing on mutual interests and regional cooperation. India and Nepal share a long-standing relationship based on geographic proximity, cultural ties, and historical links.
Nepal shares a border with five Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The age-old civilizational and cultural ties that exist between India and Nepal are exemplified by the strong people-to-people link between the countries. Nepal is a priority partner of India under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ Policy.
PM Modi also highlighted the efforts of Nepal’s young men and women, saying, “Another thing that was particularly noteworthy in the events that took place in Nepal… which people haven’t paid attention to. For the past two-three days, Nepal’s young men and women… have been seen on Nepal’s roads doing cleaning and painting work with great effort and a sense of purity.” This observation underscores the proactive role of Nepal’s youth in shaping the country’s future.
