Vice-President-elect CP Radhakrishnan to be sworn in tomorrow at 10 am: Report

CP Radhakrishnan, the newly-elected Vice-President of India, will take the oath of office and secrecy at 10:00 am tomorrow (Friday, September 12) at the Gantantra Mandap in Rashtrapati Bhavan, according to a report by the news agency UNI.

Earlier on Thursday, Radhakrishnan resigned as the Governor of Maharashtra, a post he has held since July 31, 2024. Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat was assigned the additional charge of the Governor of Maharashtra.

Radhakrishnan, who was the nominee of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), was elected as the 15th Vice President of India on Tuesday. He defeated his Congress-led INDIA bloc rival B Sudershan Reddy. Radhakrishnan received 452 first preference votes against Reddy’s 300, at least 15 votes less than the Opposition’s total votes.

A total of 767 electors cast their vote in the Vice-Presidential election held between 10 am and 5 pm on Tuesday. Of the total votes, 15 were declared invalid, and only 752 valid votes were counted.

Although Radhakrishnan’s victory was certain, given the ruling NDA had enough numbers in both houses of Parliament, the Opposition still put up a spirited fight in a contest billed as an “ideological battle”.

Radhakrishnan will succeed Jagdeep Dhankhar, whose sudden resignation in July had necessitated the election for the Vice President of India.

With more than four decades of political experience, Radhakrishnan is regarded as a respected figure in Tamil Nadu politics. He began his political journey as an RSS Swayamsevak and, in 1974, became a member of the Tamil Nadu State Executive Committee of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

It was his association with the RSS that prompted the Opposition to field B Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, in what was framed as an “ideological battle” between the BJP-led NDA and the Congress-led INDIA bloc.
