Congress General Secretary in-charge Communications and Rajya Sabha MP, Jairam Ramesh on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “over-the-top” tribute to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on his birthday was a “desperate bid to curry favour” with the RSS leadership.
On Bhagwat’s 75th birthday, Prime Minister Modi penned an article praising the RSS chief’s leadership and his lifelong dedication to societal transformation and strengthening the spirit of harmony and fraternity.
Reacting to Modi’s article, the Congress leader said, “The Prime Minister, in his desperate bid to curry favour with the RSS leadership, has written an over-the-top tribute to Mohan Bhagwat on his 75th birthday today.”
At the start of the article, Modi recalled that Bhagwat’s birthday coincides with two important historic events – Swami Vivekananda’s immortal speech in Chicago on September 11 in 1893 and the 9/11 terrorist attack in the US.
Referring to this, Ramesh pointed out that the PM didn’t mention that Mahatma Gandhi first gave the call for satyagraha on Sept 11, 1906, in Johannesburg.
“Of course it is too much to expect the PM to remember the origin of satyagraha since the very word satya is alien to him. The PM, who himself claimed to be non-biological, makes his pravachans appear as if they are God-se,” the Congress leader said.
Modi said that Bhagwat has been a living example of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, and that his tenure as the RSS chief since 2009 has been the most transformative period in the Sangh’s 100-year journey.
“Bhagwat Ji’s tenure will be considered the most transformative period in the 100-year journey of the RSS. From the change in uniform to the modifications in the Shiksha Vargs (training camps), several significant changes occurred under his leadership,” the PM said.
