Sometimes the roles we say “no” to shape us just as much as the ones we take. Hollywood star Channing Tatum recently shared a personal story about one such moment that still lingers in his memory, and it involves Ryan Gosling.
While accepting the Tribute Performer Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Tatum reflected on why he once turned down a part in Derek Cianfrance’s acclaimed 2010 drama ‘Blue Valentine’.

“About 20 years ago, Derek saw me in one of my very first films and believed in me before I believed in myself,” Tatum said in his speech. “He wanted me to be part of ‘Blue Valentine’. But honestly, I was terrified. I couldn’t do it.”
The actor revealed that at the time, he felt unprepared for the raw intensity of the story. ‘Blue Valentine’, starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, explores the rise and collapse of a marriage. Told in a non-linear way, the film demanded a deep emotional range.
“I think I blocked it out because, in some ways, I regret not doing it,” Tatum admitted. “But back then, I hadn’t lived a relationship like that. I didn’t think I could bring truth to it. I was just starting to act.”
Director Derek Cianfrance had noticed Tatum after watching his performance in ‘A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints’ (2006). He was struck by the actor’s presence, saying Tatum’s body could “tell stories” on screen.
But Tatum, still new to the industry, decided to step back.
“I was absolutely scared of that role specifically,” he explained. “Looking back, maybe I wasn’t ready for it. Ryan [Gosling] ended up killing it, so maybe it was always meant for him.”
The actor shared that his past decision came up again recently while working with Cianfrance on their upcoming film ‘Roofman’. “He reminded me of the time I said no,” Tatum recalled with a smile. “And I thought, yeah, I know. I wish I had done it, but maybe it wasn’t mine to do.”
In ‘Roofman’, which hits theatres on October 10, Tatum takes on the role of real-life convict Jeffrey Manchester. Manchester became infamous for robbing dozens of McDonald’s restaurants and later hiding out inside a Toys “R” Us store for six months, even starting a romance with a divorced mother played by Kirsten Dunst.
