Heavy rains in Uttarakhand have triggered landslides, leaving the Gangotri and Yamunotri National Highways blocked by debris and boulders, disrupting movement in the region.

In a post on X, officials said the Gangotri Highway was blocked at Dharasu, Netalam Charethi, and Bhatwari, while clarifying that the stretches between Harsil and Dharali and from Dharali to Gangotri remained open for vehicular movement.

“In Uttarkashi district, the Gangotri National Highway is blocked at Dharasu, Netala, Charethi, and Bhatwari due to debris and boulders. Efforts are underway by the BRO to restore the route. Meanwhile, the stretch between Harsil and Dharali is open to vehicles, as is the route from Dharali to Gangotri,” the Uttarakhand DIPR said in a post on X.

Officials further informed that the Yamunotri Highway was blocked near Silai Band, the dilapidated Gaad in Junglechatti, and Naardchatti. They added that efforts were underway to make the stretch between Junglechatti and Dabarkot accessible.

“The Yamunotri National Highway is blocked near Silai Band, at the dilapidated Gaad in Junglechatti, Banas, and Naardchatti. Efforts are underway to restore accessibility at Junglechatti and Dabarkot. Meanwhile, the Barkot–Damta–Vikasnagar National Highway, the Uttarkashi–Suwakholi–Dehradun Motor Road, and the Uttarkashi–Lambgaon Motor Road are operational for traffic,” the post further stated.

Applauding the efforts of personnel engaged in relief work, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in a post on X that 1,747 roads had been reopened, while work was underway to clear other routes blocked by debris and heavy rains. He noted that JCB machines had been deployed on affected roads in advance, and relief measures were being provided to residents in the worst-hit areas.

“Disaster management and relief operations are being carried out on a war footing. So far, 1,747 roads have been opened, while work is in progress on 80 more. Traffic has been restored on 95.62% of the roads obstructed by debris and landslides,” the CM stated, adding that officials had been directed to take immediate action wherever blockages occurred, enabling rapid restoration of connectivity.

Dhami further assured that the safety and convenience of residents remained the government’s top priority, with continuous efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods, electricity, and water. “Regular inspections of disaster-affected areas are being conducted, and I am personally reviewing the relief and rescue operations,” he said.
