Sometimes, the film industry throws up situations that sound stranger than fiction. One such moment recently came to light when Malayalam actress Swasika revealed that she was approached to play the mother of Telugu actor Ram Charan, despite being much younger than him.
The 33-year-old actress, who is still in the early stages of her career, spoke openly about the surprising offer during a press interaction. She explained that over the past few years, she has been repeatedly offered mother roles in films.

“The one that shocked me the most was to play mother of Ram Charan,” Swasika shared. “It’s in Telugu, a big movie called ‘Peddi’. But to play Ram Charan’s mother? I just couldn’t accept that. I said no right away.”
Her reaction makes sense. Ram Charan is 40 years old, seven years older than Swasika. The idea of her being cast as his mother felt both odd and unfair to her as an actor.
For Swasika, this was not simply about screen time, but about being typecast at an age when she still has a wide range of roles to explore.
Swasika, whose real name is Pooja Vijay, has carved her own space in the Malayalam film industry over the last decade. Known for both her television work and film roles, she has often played strong supporting characters.
But in 2021, she stepped into the spotlight with ‘Vasanthi’, a film directed by the Rahman brothers. The movie premiered at the International Film Festival of Kerala and earned rave reviews. Her performance was so powerful that she won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Character Actor (Female). The film itself also bagged Best Film and Best Script that year.
