Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo on Monday, taking part in a high-level meeting, discussed the proposal to open a Central agricultural university in Sambalpur as per the Central Agricultural University Act, 1992.

If everything goes as per the plan and the institution is established, it will be India’s fourth Central agricultural university. It will help produce graduates and postgraduates for global competitiveness in agriculture and allied sciences and will help increase productivity and develop sustainable and profitable farming systems in this sector, said officials of agriculture and farmers empowerment department.

“The proposed Central Agricultural University will be a game changer for Odisha as its establishment will advance agricultural research, empower farmers, and promote innovation in sustainable farming methods”, said Singh Deo.

This decision will prove beneficial in ensuring food and nutritional security for the people by transforming agriculture and allied professions into profitable enterprises, he added.

The meeting was attended among others by Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment, and Vice Chancellor, Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, Dr. Pravat Kumar Raul.

Currently, India has three Central agricultural universities, including Central Agricultural University (Imphal), Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (Pusa, Bihar), Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University (Jhansi) established under the Central Agricultural University Act, 1992 and recognized by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
