Accompanying her post were glimpses from the 1986 film ‘Karma; with the patriotic song “Ae Watan Tere Liye” playing softly in the background.
In her note, Saira wrote that some memories “don’t just live in photographs or words, they breathe inside us.” She said that her memories often come like “a gentle breeze carrying the scent of home.”
She added that even though she was raised in an English environment, the traditions, aromas, and values of India were always close to her heart. “It lived in the adab Appaji so tenderly taught me and Sultan Bhai… in the aromas of home-cooked delicacies I would savor, one plate after another,” she said.
Saira Banu on Dilip Kumar:
Saira called Dilip Kumar, who passed away in 2021, her greatest blessing. She wrote that looking back, she sees how destiny brought her to him.
“He knew where I truly belonged… and in that destiny, He placed my greatest blessing, my beloved husband. Dilip Sahab was the most desi man I have ever known, a soul who carried his roots with unmatched pride and grace,” she said.
The actress highlighted that Dilip Kumar’s patriotism was quiet but profound. “It was in the quiet ways he served his people, in the generosity he extended without expectation, in the values he never compromised,” she wrote.
She recalled how he earned respect from leaders like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and P. V. Narasimha Rao, as well as lawyers, economists, and industrialists of his time.
What Saira admired most was how her husband understood that freedom was more than a privilege, it was a duty. She wrote, “A duty to give back to the soil that cradled us, to carry the weight of our actions with humility, and to lift up those who had less.”
In closing, Saira reflected on India’s 78th year of independence and expressed gratitude for her life and heritage. “Independence is not just about breaking free; it is about being true to who we are, cherishing our heritage, and honoring the legacy of those who gave their all for this land. Happy Independence Day,” she concluded.
