Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday marked the sixth anniversary of the Jal Jeevan Mission, a flagship scheme aimed at providing piped water connections to every rural household in India. Launched on August 15, 2019, the mission has made significant strides in transforming the lives of millions of people across the country.

“We mark #6YearsOfJalJeevanMission, a scheme that focuses on dignity and transforming lives. It has also ensured better healthcare, especially for our Nari Shakti,” he said in a post on social media handle X.

The mission has successfully provided tap water connections to over 15.44 crore households, accounting for 79.74 percent of all rural households in India.

The scheme has not only improved access to clean drinking water but also enhanced healthcare, especially for women, and promoted rural livelihoods.

The mission emphasizes community participation, stakeholder engagement, and political will, with local governance institutions playing a crucial role in planning and managing water resources.

The Jal Jeevan Mission has been instrumental in reducing the drudgery of women and girls who previously spent hours fetching water from distant sources. By providing tap water connections, the scheme has improved health outcomes, increased productivity, and empowered women to take charge of their lives.

As the mission continues to make progress, the government aims to achieve 100 percent coverage of rural households with piped water connections. With its focus on sustainability, community participation, and water conservation, the Jal Jeevan Mission is set to become a model for public welfare programs globally.
